Surfing in Scotland

Caithness boasts a coastline prime for surfing!

The closest location to hit the waves from our lodges is Dunnet Bay, a sandy beach which stretches for over two miles and picks up the north sea swells. Because of its sheltered location, it’s a great place to try surfing out for the first time!

The postcode for Dunnet Beach is KW14 8XD, and there are public toilets available at the Seadrift Centre car park.

Thurso East is known as the surfing cold water mecca of Scotland, often hosting Scottish and National Surfing Championships in March and October. It’s found at the mouth of the River Thurso, with views of Thurso Castle in sight.

A shelf of slate reef gives an ultimate challenge, best suited for intermediate and advanced surfers who enjoy right barrels!

The nearby Thurso town beach also offers beginner or intermediate opportunities.

Heading west over the Caithness/Sutherland border, Melvich and Strathy East are also favourite locations for surfing.
